Midlife weight change is metabolic — not a character flaw.

The shift toward abdominal weight and away from muscle happens even without a change in habits. It deserves medical evaluation and treatment, not another lecture.

What actually changes at midlife

Through the menopause transition, body composition shifts toward abdominal fat and away from muscle — even without any change in eating or activity. Estrogen loss, changing insulin sensitivity, disrupted sleep, and age-related muscle loss all push in the same direction at once. Naming this accurately matters, because "eat less, move more" is not a treatment for a hormonal and metabolic shift.

How we evaluate it

A medical weight evaluation here covers the things a lecture skips: thyroid function, insulin resistance and glucose, lipids, relevant medications, sleep, and menopausal status itself. Body composition — not just the scale — frames the goal, because preserving muscle through midlife is as important as losing fat.

How we treat it

Treatment is individualized and medical: structured nutrition and resistance-training guidance, treatment of insulin resistance where present, modern obesity medications — including GLP-1–class therapy, which our parent practice uses extensively — and coordination with your hormone plan, since treating night sweats and sleep often unlocks everything else. Our parent practice runs a dedicated Obesity & Weight Loss center; complex cases move seamlessly between the two.
